Hack: Table Lamp Built From Camera and Tripod

What would make the perfect work lamp? A firm, steady base which can be adjusted to any height, and any surface? A multiply adjustable light which can be locked into any position? A big, bright lens which can throw the light wide or narrow?

The answer to all of these is “yes,” and all of them are a available if you put a light inside camera on a tripod.

This is just what Kirsty of Kootooyou did, ending up with this amazing lamp fashioned from a tripod, an old Cosina 35mm film SLR and a light bulb.

UK Supermarket Sainsbury’s Offers iPad-Ready Shopping Carts 29th Aug 2011

UK Supermarket Sainsbury’s Offers iPad-Ready Shopping Carts

UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is trialling a new shopping cart with a built-in iPad dock and speakers. I’ll let you consider that for a moment. Imagine hordes of marauding shoppers barging through the aisles, staring at their tablets’ screens and pumping out a mixed cacophony of tinny tunes. If you are imagining hell right now, only with a frozen food section, you’re probably pretty close.

The trolleys are a promo scheme to pimp Sky TV’s Sky Go service, an app which lets you watch sports and news on your iPad.

Pocket Grill for Convenient Campfire Cooking 23rd Aug 2011

Pocket Grill for Convenient Campfire Cooking

While much of the world inhabited by Gadget Lab readers has mercifully returned to temperatures conducive to work and play, here in Barcelona, Spain, the weather is a hellish combination of hot and humid, the kind of weather that requires you take a pair of spare T-shirts should you need to go outside.

Which is a roundabout way of saying that its still grilling season here, and what better way to enjoy an impromptu BBQ in the cool surrounding mountains than with the Pocket Grill.

Android Apps Come to Google TV With Software Release 22nd Aug 2011

Android Apps Come to Google TV With Software Release

Google released a set of software tools on Monday that will allow developers to create Android applications for Google TV devices.

With the new tools, developers can test their existing mobile or tablet Android applications in a big-screen environment, eventually porting them over to run on Google TV. It’s also possible to create new Android applications made specifically for Google TV.

“With the add-on you can test your apps to determine if they would be a good fit for TV and whether any tweaks are required,” wrote Google TV product manager Ambarish Kenghe in a blog post.

Sony DEV5 Looks Like Luke Skywalker’s Binoculars

Now you too can track down Sand People and hunt the horizon for lonely, brown-robed old Jedis with Sony’s new NEX binoculars. The binos, named DEV3 and DEV5, pack a CMOS sensor, two lenses and two electronic eyepieces instead of the usual light-folding optical prism design. Because of this all-electronic pipeline, you can also snap stills, along with 2-D and 3-D video.

Well-Heeled Bicycle Shoes Make for Pedal-Powered Night Out 14th Aug 2011

Well-Heeled Bicycle Shoes Make for Pedal-Powered Night Out

Cycling is a bummer for riders who don’t have the option to change clothes post-commute. Leather-soled wingtips slip on metal pedals. All but the tightest jeans require rolling up the pant leg to avoid chain grease. The problem is compounded for those who don heels, braving a bicycle route fashionably rather than comfortably.

Merrell, sensitive to this plight, will soon be releasing the Evera MJ, a heeled bike shoe with bottom contours that fit snug into pedals, and a rubber sole that grips where your Christian Louboutins would slip and scuff. The suede upper has elastic accents near the toe for flexibility while torquing uphill, and a Velcro strap secures the shoe to any arch.

Concrete Alternative Could Make For Stronger Buildings 10th Aug 2011

Concrete Alternative Could Make For Stronger Buildings

As Japan works to repair the damage caused by the recent earthquake and tsunami, a newly discovered alternative to concrete may make structures stronger in a fraction of the time.

Japanese architectural design office TIS & Partners created CO2 Structure, a building material that supersedes brick and concrete in many ways. When combined with epoxy or urethane, CO2 Structure is twice as strong as regular concrete. While normal gray concrete takes up to 28 days to harden fully, CO2 Structure is ready within 24 hours.

Courts Ban Sale of Samsung Galaxy Tab in Europe

A European court has blocked the sale of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 across the European Union, in every member state except the Netherlands. It seems that Apple applied to the court in Dusseldorf, Germany, and an injunction preventing the sale of the copycat tablet was issued without even consulting Samsung.

Bike Mount for Foxl’s ‘Audiophile’ Portable Speaker 7th Aug 2011

Bike Mount for Foxl’s ‘Audiophile’ Portable Speaker

I have tried mounting a speaker on my bike, but it never quite seems to work. The closest I came to success was to tie the JawBone Jambox to my handlebar with a pair of toe-straps, but the Bluetooth connection is rather flaky and the tiny speaker’s sound isn’t up to the noise of city streets.

I am tempted by Foxl’s new Bike Kit Bundle, a bar-mount for the Foxl Hi-Fi speaker. We last saw this speaker — which claims audiophile status thanks to its “twofer” speakers that combine mid-range and tweeter into one unit, and its “bass battery,” which uses the rechargeable li-ion battery as the mass for the subwoofer — back in February.
